Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Be impressed with this Philips DVD player with HDMI digital video and audio connection. Step into another home entertainment arena as you immerse yourself with High Definition video (720p / 1080i/1080p). HDMI for simple AV connection: HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analog signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with (Digital Video Interface) DVI.DivX Ultra Certified: DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.High definition JPEG playback: High definition JPEG playback lets you view your pictures on your television in resolutions as high as two megapixels. Now you can view your digital pictures in absolute clarity, without loss of quality or detail - and share them with friends and family in the comfort of your living room.Progressive Scan: Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Link: The Universal Serial Bus or USB is a protocol standard that is conveniently used to link PCs, peripherals and consumer electronic equuipment. Hi-Speed USB devices have a data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps - up from the 12 Mbps in original USB ones. With Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Link, all you have to do is plug in your USB device, select the movie, music or photo and play away.

1 out of 5 stars dvp 5992 junk   January 2, 2009

my philips dvp 5992 lasted less than 3 months then crapped out... would try to load a disc then after sometime would display "no disc" - and I did try to use the region hack code to see if that worked. I called Philips to see what recourse I had - they asked if I tried to change the region code - I said yes and they informed me that by doing so voided my warranty. My first dvd player last almost 10 years this one not even 3 months. JUNK!

4 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons   December 23, 2008
Purchased on Amazon by $65 shipping included last month.

Pros - all that you know, upconvert, price, size, and most of all, the USB interface.

Cons - It takes long time (6 seconds is too much, right?) just to open the tray even after power on or in stop condition. The Audio Volume or Mute doesn't work in Analog Audio, IT SHOULD. There is no Auto-Play function for sound (mp3, etc) or image file (jpg, etc) - the old dvp642 has it, and it is a very nice missing feature in this unit.

Suggestions - upon loading, read a possible file "AUTOPLAY.INI" instructing what directory and file to start play upon loading. So you could have image and sound automatically upon inserting a CD or USB. Install CompactFlash, SD, XD, etc, memory slots on the front panel, so we could play photo camera memory directly and play it. The JPG (image) show could have some parameter setup screen, such as time per picture, etc. Except for the SD/XD/CF slots, all the other suggestion above are 100% doable with the actual hardware, just new software design. Create an extra configuration screen to the user SELECT what is planning to play on such unit, if never need to play a DiVx or JPG disk, the loading of a plain DVD would be much faster, since the unit will never need to understand what the media contains from a long list of possibilities.

Other than that? Good unit, good price, good power consume, good visual. It didn't need to be so wide though, pure empty space inside.

2 out of 5 stars Great as long as it works..   December 13, 2008
This DVD player is a deal, no kidding. When it worked it took everything I threw at it (as long as it was within the restrictions). I was also very contented with the HDMI upscaling. Though it might not have been the best, you can't really beat having a USB port as well (Sony doesn't have a similarly price player that has that). Recently, however, the HDMI port on the DVD player must have fried, image from it is now a tie dye wash of bright colors, the standard screen is bright orange instead of blue for example. Switching over to component cables, everything was fine however. Of course that defeats the purpose of buying this DVD player and I will have to return it after around 3 months of on and off use. It's a shame and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Plays AVI's in XVID as well as DIVX   December 10, 2008

I was pleasantly surprised that this machine will play XVID encoded avi's as well as the DIVX encoded ones. This means I can use a free conversion program to make all my AVI's into a format that can be played on this player. Love it!

1 out of 5 stars Problem prone junk   November 30, 2008

Out of the box, this thing would usually get stuck within the first few minutes of DivX videos on the USB port. I've only had the unit about ninety days and now, it refuses to even play DVD's. Look at other options.
