New Kindler October 6, 2008 I love my Kindle. I read the reviews before I purchased, good and not so good, and ordered anyway. I am more pleased than I even anticipated. Kindle is exactly what its supposed to be. An electronic book. I can easily download books, it has a long battery life, its easily transported, I can read it anywhere. Buttons on either side make it easy for me, as a left handed person. The buttons are a little easy to press accidently but this is not so bad considering how many times I have dropped a regular book and lost my page or tried to read at the beach in a breeze while pages flapped. While I am sure feature lovers will want a device to do everything (phone, music, instant internet and e-mail) I find that for my needs, with book storage out of control at my house, Kindle is all I need it to be.
Kindle is one of the best items I have ever purchased! October 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am an avid reader and buy literally dozens of books each year. A good portion of those books are purchased online thru Amazon. I noticed a few months ago that I was running out of storage space in my house, so rather than cut back on my reading, I decided to purchase a Kindle. It has turned out to be one of my best purchases ever! I love the ease of use and the flexibility that the Kindle gives me. Its' compact size and weight lets me carry it everywhere. The ability to download books at a moment's notice is fantastic! Whispernet is great! I have already read about 10 books on the Kindle and absolutely LOVE IT! The only 'real' books I will purchase now will be hardcover collectibles.
A couple of cons: 1) the cover provided with the Kindle did not work for me, I was very afraid of dropping my $350 toy. Another corner strap (such as on the M-Edge cover) would be useful. ALSO, and this is a biggie - ADD A HOLE ON THE BACK SO THAT THE SWITCHES ARE ACCESSIBLE. I ended up buying the M-Edge cover and making my own hole on the back with a boxcutter. Works great because I don't have to keep removing the cover to turn it on or off! 2) Amazon should get more small local papers online. My local paper is not available and I would subscribe to it if I could.
Wonderful product whose time has come October 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I totally love my Kindle! My son is undergoing a serious and lengthy (4-6 months) medical procedure far from home, and I am here with him in the hospital. Having so many books at my disposal (without having to bring physical books or run to the book store) is incredibly wonderful and convenient.
I do wonder what they were thinking when they designed the page-turn buttons the way they did. It is very difficult to find a way to hold the Kindle without inadvertently turning a page (or three or four). With a few tips from others online, I have learned to deal with it, but definitely feel they need more finger-gripping places when they make Kindle 2.0. Also, please put the power button on the FRONT of the device!
That being said, I wouldn't trade it for the world - it's terrific!
Reading has become fun again October 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Kindle had proven to be an excellent reading device with only a few minor glitches - nothing major - and is to be expected with a first generation device like this.
The thing that has impressed me most about it is the fact that it has made reading a fun, easier, more integral part of my everyday life again. Reason being, I have only ever purchased books by authors that I truly know and love. I never cared to spend money on books by unknown authors, mainly because I didn't want the books laying around cluttering up the house, or being detrimental to the environment due to all of the paper used to make them in the first place. Now, I can purchase Kindle books by authors I'm not familar with and try them out so to speak without ending up with a lot of books on the shelf that take up space, never get read, and end up being nothing more then a waste of paper.
We've recently gone to purchasing downloaded music only in order to help save us from having piles of CD's to lug around and store, as well as using up so much plastic for the materials to make them. And now, with the Kindle, we can download all the books we want and not only help our storage problem, but help the environment as well by saving on paper.
For me, it's a win win situation. And besides, this is where our society is heading in the long run - to an "All Digital" format on pretty much everything we use like this. Might as well get used to it now rather then later. :)
Moi's Review October 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I received my Kindle as a gift for my anniversary. I commute everyday and it's so great not to have to carry around a bunch of heavy books. Everything I want to read is self contained.
We also just got back from an vacation in Vegas and while waiting at the airport for our flights and sitting for a long time on the plane it was very handy. No more taking books on vacation, all I need is my Kindle.
