We have had this vacuum for a couple of years now and found it to be excellent. It sucks up dirt and dust very well, but the best part is the fact you can pull it apart and wash all the filters. So it continues to operate at full efficiency. It seems well made and we have had no problems with it. The battery did stop taking a charge after about 16 months so we bought a new one, not the genuine Dyson one, but a cheaper copy, which worked.
Even though the battery was relatively expensive, around $60, it was better value than buying a new hand held vacuum which would not be as good as the Dyson, and not have the great feature of being washable.
So my advice is just bite the bullet and get the new battery when you need to and enjoy using a better quality, more effective vacuum over the longer term.

I LOVED this vacuum!! It was awesome...for a family of 6...it was great for the stairs, car, highchairs, dog fur. But now after having it for over a year...it will NOT hold a charge!! I'm SSSOOO upset!! We always charged it exactly as the manual said. It now runs for about 20 seconds then shuts off...uuugghhhh!! Now I have to buy another one AND it won't be by Dyson!!!

Just another voice in the chorus of protest about the horrible battery life of this unit and the added insult of charging $75 for a replacement. I was seriously considering getting a Dyson upright, but after seeing their disregard for customers as expressed in this handheld, I'll pass. You've lost a customer, Dyson.
