Scalloped, fluted edges and lavish ornamentation make Stratford Platinum a pattern to be saved for only the most special occasions. Crafted of fine ivory porcelain, which despite the name is a bright white, each translucent piece gleams with platinum trim. The lightly textured trim features a classical twisted rope pattern, a solid band, and eight symmetrical acanthus leaves, each carefully centered on a subtly fluted rib. The nine-inch accent plate adds a striking complement to the dinnerware place setting. All four in this set are identical, and feature in addition to the typical Stratford platinum trim, a full border of thin radiating lines in white alternating with two shades: a pale gray and a gray with just a hint of green. While safe for the dishwasher, the china should be allowed to cool before handling in order to avoid harming the trim, which softens when hot. The platinum trim does not allow the pattern to be used in the microwave. --Ann Bieri
