Kitchen composting September 6, 2010 Cara This is a nice addition to my kitchen. It makes it much more convenient to add trimmings etc. to my compost. Prevents my lazy habit of throwing things directly in the trash. One good tip would be to buy the compostable bags to make it even easier!
Way better than plastic bags. September 5, 2010 Ellen Feinstein Krueger (Acton, MA) For years, I've been hauling dripping, icky plant matter to my compost bin using whatever was handy, mostly plastic bags or containers from vegetables. Aside from being messy, it went against any green impulses I have by using plastic that then had to be tossed, rather than recycled. This crock, while kind of big, allows me to hold vegetable cast-offs on the counter in an attractive container that keeps fruit flies at bay. It also lets me postpone the inevitable trip to the garden because it holds more than your average plastic bag. It's a one gallon container that is tall, rather than spread out. There's a charcoal filter in the lid to staunch the stench and, as mentioned above, deter any fruit flies that magically appear around peelings. If you're looking for a way to facilitate composting, this may help you. Now, if they'd only come up with something that would actually take it outside for me, that would be excellent. This particular crock does everything the more expensive crocks do. The filter is replaceable and can be purchased separately.
No complaints here August 10, 2010 Victoria L. Morgan (Florida) I received this as a gift. I had been composting just using a bowl to collect scraps but this is much better. Love the red color that goes with my kitchen. No complaints. The handle comes off easily so I can put the canister and lid in the dishwasher when it gets funky. I have other kitchen items that are stainless steel and they are very hard to keep clean, so the ceramic is a good choice for someone like me who hates fingerprints and smears. Do follow the suggestions to order the 93 F replacement charcoal filters.
needs to be more durable July 31, 2010 Jessica S. (Bozeman, MT) It looks nice and keeps my kitchen from smelling with the compostable waste in it. However, it is very delicate and the lid has already cracked from being dropped about 6 inches onto a laminate counter top. For something I use every day while doing dishes (and thus have wet slippery hands) I would like something a little more durable. If you aren't as accident prone though it would probably work fine for you.
attractive & useful July 23, 2010 Becky B. Rayburn (Albany, GA) I like the amount of items this container holds & it's most attractive. It also has a filter in the top that can be replaced periodically; a nice feature to keep odors out of the kitchen. A friend recently commented on what a nice looking container; when I told him it was my compost pail he was very impressed.
