4 out of 5 stars Everyday Carry Tool   September 5, 2010
Arthur E. Albin
I carry this tool everyday. I work in an office but play outdoors. I find it useful all the time. The knife blade is large enough to do much more than open letters. The pliers / wire cutters function the same as a dedicated tool for the same purpose. The screw driver function works as a convenience. The ability to drive screws with the handle at ninety degrees allow the user to create turning power. It's more difficult to create a lot of down force with the screw driver because edges of the handle can dig into your palm. It is possible to open the blade quickly with your thumb for self defense but other knives would function better for that purpose. The blade requires regular sharpening. Only the last inch is designed for carving or shaving. The main blade is thicker for chopping. The line clip is plenty stony to retain the tool but far from strong enough to suspend a person. The bottle opener is effective.

The belt clip should only be used for temporary carry. I loss one of these tools carrying it clipped that way. I like the tool so much I purchased several. I carry this in my rear pocket. The tool creates wear marks on my jeans. When closed for carry, there are no sharp edges to poke me or my clothing.

The tool is very well made for the price. The fit and finish is good but its not a work of art. Rather this is an everyday tool I am not afraid to use and occasionally abuse

1 out of 5 stars Stylish but Not Durable or Practical   September 3, 2010

This tool looks great, has a good weight, has a very sharp blade, and is easy to open. However, I found: 1) the metal is very soft (the blade easily nicks--a problem for trying to sharpen the blade); 2) the pliers are not made of metal (mine snapped clean in half the first time I used it); 3) it rusts easily (I had it in a bag on a weekend trip in the Atlantic and is rusted in many spots); and 4) the sides of the pliers are not parallel (i.e. when the pliers close they close on the tip of the pliers while the rest of teeth do not touch--this may be part of the reason they break).

As I noted my pliers broke right after I got them when I used the pliers to close a link on an ornamental chain (I was not even gripping all the tight). I was really shocked to see that the pliers were not made of metal but were made of some type of composite material with a metal finish. Amazon was great and returned the item very promptly. Leatherman has a great warranty and I think they would honor any issue. The only reason I'm writing this is because reviews have been so helpful for me and I thought buyers should know the issues.

5 out of 5 stars Right Tool for the Job   August 24, 2010
T. Morse (Annapolis, MD USA)
I am in the military, and at one point in my training I was told that I should always have a pen, paper, and a knife on my person. I would now make an amendment to that statement because I think everyone should have a pen, paper and Skeletool on their person. Because this tool is so light, it is not a burden to carry around what would normally be a bulky, heavy tool. In addition, because the skeletool only has the essentials there is no fiddling around with the 13,000 extra toothpicks and saw attachments. For someone who does not need a lot of specialized tools normally found on a leatherman, the screwdriver, knife, pliers, and caribeaner/bottle opener are everything I need.

The only problem I have found so far is durability. This is my second skeletool (after a year of heavy use on the first) and the only reason I got a new one is because my last one was confiscated at the airport. As far as durability, the detachable pocket clip on the back is somewhat flimsy (instead of using that, I would simply clip the tool to my pocket using the caribeaner. Also, the extra screwdriver head fell out of its storage compartment after about 6 months of use in the field. Other than that though I had no issues with the blade or the pliers, which is usually where tools will fail first.

If you don't need something fancy, but a pair of pliers and a screwdriver come in handy, then get your hands on a Leatherman Skeletool.

5 out of 5 stars Great item   July 26, 2010

This item is, in my opinion, probably one of the better Letherman tools available. I use it mainly for camping, and it has everything I need. Plus, the cost was very reasonable.

3 out of 5 stars Just ok - not as good as it should be for the price.   July 14, 2010

Just received the Skeletool from Amazon after much deliberation - it seemed like a great every day carry type tool but it was a bit expensive. I took the plunge based on leatherman's excellent reputation, however the product does not have the build quality to justify the expensive price. It looks and feels decent, but it lacks detail - it doesnt approach the quality of the USA made Gerber MP600 i have from 8 years ago nor any of my Swiss Army Knives. edges are a little rough, the "Skeletool" marking is a bit smudged, the plier head "leatherman" is indistinct and it doesnt look like it was even made in the US (no proud country of origin etching on this one!). The knife is stiff and the liner lock lacks smoothness. Much worse than my CRKT, Kershaw or Meyerco knives.

So : Useful tools, good size and weight. Mediocre quality and too expensive for its build. Doesnt have the feeling of beautiful precision that one gets from top quality tools.
